Match Reports

R v S 5/12/03

The teams played as per draw. Jean Bryans won the toss and Liz's lot won the first end by 2 shots. Thereafter the pattern for a number of ends was that Liz's front end (if you will excuse the expression) played extremely well and put them in the driving seat. Liz's back end(!!!) sewed things up and Brian was having to play damage limitation stuff which he did, restricting Liz to a series of ones. However like dogs that chase cars, it couldn't last. Brian lost a 4 and a 2 to go 11-0 down. At the final end, once more up against it, with his last shot facing a guarded stone touching the button and other oppositon stones counting, he drew the shot to the button and a well deserved 1.

This semi started dramatically with George feeling woosy and Liz rushing about giving him chocolate bars and sending Colin J for a full-fat Pepsi to ensure George's diabetes was kept at bay. ' I dont know if I should be so charitable' muttered CJ darkly, seeing a possible advantage going to waste.

A good 2 at the first end for Liz was followed by a 3 for a clearly revived George at the 2nd. Thereafter it was end apiece but George and his rink held the edge. "You should have had the biscuits and I should have had the Pepsi " said Colin to Liz. Can I have a drink of your Pepsi ? asked Colin of George. 'No, I already spat in it' said G. 'What a coincidence' replied CJ

At the final end (as it turned out) some excellent curling took place. George was leading by 3 shots at 7-4 although there had been 3 ends apiece. Both sides had a shot in early and guarded. Liz needed a stone tight to the opposing yellow to give her something to loosen it and Angus provided just that with a nice draw. John W ( who had an excellent game prior to this) was a little heavy with a guard and a tap meant that the yellow was edged away from its locked position. CJ added to the draws into the combat zone such that with George's first stone to come, red stones were lying 1,2 and 4 and 6 with only 2 yellows in the house at 3 and 5. George who had played like a hero all night decided that granite should be moved (he disagreed with CJ afterwards who felt a draw in to the reds would have made it impossible for the reds to get more than 2)

Granite was moved-- unfortunately for George it was of the yellow variety as a heavy wide stone crashed out G's 3rd shot and the shooter was then deflected on to his other yellow removing it in passing to leave 4 red stones in the house and no yellows!!

Liz played a very good guard which CJ swept just into the house in case of any more pyrotechnics from George, it would be a counter. George was still in the driving seat as a draw round the guard was still possible. He chose exactly the correct ice but was just a little too heavy and drifted through yielding a 5 and victory (Liz did not rub it in by playing her last) We had squeaked through by the skin of our teeth. It was rough justice for George as he played and skipped flawlessly up to the final end.

Unfortunately the second semi final was 18 - 6. We gave 5 shots for only three players then lost a four at the first end. I think its called a mountain becoming a bigger mountain!

John Martin Final

Sheet 4, Monday ice which Jim did not pebble at all after the 5.15 games came off. It was bound to go flat and it did.

Liz's team: CJ, Gus and Jim Watson subbing for Jean Bryans John H's team: Robert, Katie and Helen subbing for David McIntosh

First end was dominated by Liz's team who took a 3 . The next 2 ends saw a shift though with John taking a 2 then stealing a 1. A further steal of 1 put the Hodge rink into the lead. The following end saw Liz take her jacket off and her rink took a 4 which could have been more. Score now 7-4.

The 6th end saw Liz defending a 1 in the house against a number of blues and despite a great attempt at an angled raise by John, it stayed. 8-4

After a so-so start to end 7 , the Liz rink was aided by some wayward opposition shots which meant that she was lying 2 and guarded but there were several opposition stones lying around. A strike on a back blue which lifted a second blue on passing , cut the peripheral blues to 2 but the whites lying 3. A draw by John was too strong and went to the back ring. CJ asked Liz to take it out (against her wishes to draw to the centre) and once she had done so the game was won as there were not enough blue stones to make up the deficit. John drew a nice shot which was swept in for 2nd.

Final score 9-4.

Quote from Katie to CJ "Well played you competitive old git"
